Silicone Sealants

Silicone sealants are adhesives that are most often used to create a water or airtight seal in the joint between two surfaces. Silicone sealant has a gel consistency which cures by drying over a period of time, with the correct temperature and humidity. The cured product is a durable yet flexible, silicone rubber.

Why use a silicone sealant?
They are very easy to use and enable you to create a waterproof join with minimal effort. Silicone sealants are weatherproof and can withstand a wide range of temperatures. The sealants bond to many different materials, are long-lasting and do not promote mould growth.

Types of Silicone Sealants:
Silicone sealants come in a range of different colours such as black, grey, white and clear. They typically come in a cartridge or tube and many have a nozzle for precise bead application. There are squeeze tubes which are used by hand or rigid tubes for use with a sealant gun.

Most silicone sealant is multi-purpose and can be used for general applications and bonds with many materials. Sanitary silicone sealants are best for wet applications for example in bathrooms. This is because they are resistant against mould and mildew.

Other things to consider when purchasing a silicone sealant is whether it is suitable for indoor or outdoor use, is it mould resistant, or whether you have any specific operating temperatures that could affect the efficiency of the silicone. Both heat and cold can affect silicone sealant and compromise its ability to seal.
